Moosemen Match Report
2 things were realized on Saturday in Sewanee as MTSU sought to defeat their neighbors in rematch game, one: Sewanee's team as come a long way in recent years and is showing some great skills, and two: MTSU is searching for a hearbeat right now.
The game was played on Sewanee's campus on their homecoming day. The weather was a chilly mid-50's in the shade and a cool 60's in the sun. Onlookers trickled in and were in the 70's approximately by the end of the match which made for a noisey home crowd as the Blue Raiders looked to turn their fortunes. Sewanee looked good early and nearly made an attempt at goal, but fell just short. MTSU fought with ferocity to maul into the tryzone where Matt Smuck forced his way down for a try. The conversion kick was missed. Making the score 5-0, MTSU. Between the gappy defense of MTSU's backs and the slow arrival to the rucks by the pack, MTSU had to struggle intensely to keep Sewanee out of the tryzone giving up 19 points thereafter in the first half. Some of the trys were blistering runs and others just good solid phase ball that the MT players couldn't seem to break. The inability to gain a continuous offensive flow again worsened the demise of MT's team.
8-19 at the half.
Down by only 11 points, the coaches tried to stir the players and repair verbally things that had to change in the second half physically. However, the second half would prove to be more of the same...downhill for Sewanee as they came in and scored an unanswered 12 points making the final score a disheartening 8-31 and MTSU's 7th straight loss of this season.
The B game that followed was played with 30 minutes halves and MTSU won by a shutout of 24-0.
